Australia’s challenge
Climate change is happening and now is the time to shape our future.
Climate action is not just an issue of reducing emissions and adapting to changing weather and environment. It is about shaping and positioning our economy, society and environment for future success.
Over the next 10 years, Australia’s development pathway needs to shift towards delivering deep and rapid cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, and a society and economy that is resilient to the consequences of climate change. Currently, Australia has no collective national plan to develop in a way that delivers these outcomes. This is despite mounting international pressure and significant demand from our own industries, businesses and communities.
The clear challenge ahead for Australia is to establish a national platform that enables society to work together on climate action and deliver the sustainable development needed for a prosperous future. Simply, we need a national platform that can:
- Reduce Australia’s risk to a changing climate and world.
- Enhance Australia’s opportunity in a changing world.
- Enable widespread participation in this transition.
- Ensure we are able to meet this challenge at scale.
